As a move intended to offer major relief to older people whose fingerprints and irises are unclear, aadhaar will now allow face recognition along with biometrics. The decision comes after the Unique Identification Authority of India's attempt to address privacy concerns by offering the option of creating virtual IDs that cover the actual unique identification number of a user during an UID-authenticated transaction.
By July 1, face authentication will provide an option in combination with a fingerprint, iris scan or an OTP to validate the details of users. It is also expected to be successful in dealing with problems faced by older users with blurred biometrics. To ensure the live presence of the user, the authentication requires some facial movements like blinking, smiling etc. Face authentication will not require any new reference data as photos of citizens which is already on the Aadhaar database. The objective is to increase the coverage of the system so that government benefits like pensioners, are not denied their dues.
While accessing fertiliser subsidies under the Aadhaar authenticated system, the farmers found that using fingerprint authentication alone to be problematic. UIDAI statement says that, 'face authentication would be allowed only as fusion mode, meaningly only along with either fingerprint or iris scan or OTP, to verify the details of the Aadhaar holder'. As aadhaar numbers are being used for identity authentications across banks, telecom companies, the public distribution system, and for income tax, among others, its use can be estimated from the fact that an average four crore authentications are done on a daily basis. The UIDAI will work with biometric device providers to combine face modality into the registered devices to make the new authentication service easy. It will also line up SDKs that will have the ability to capture face images, check liveness and create digitally signed and encrypted authentication inputs.
