Biometrics and demographic data-based 12-digit unique identity number, the Aadhaar is said to be the world’s largest biometric ID system. Considered a proof of residence in India, but not of Indian citizenship, the Aadhar card consists of an individual’s personal details such as the name, address, date of birth, registered mobile number and e-mail address along with the biometrics.
Given its all-encompassing nature in terms of the identity of an individual, the system has led to the rise of several privacy-related concerns. Such concerns have pushed the Indian government to come up with offline tools for Aadhaar verification which will rule out the need of sharing biometrics or the involvement of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) server. One such tool is the Paperless local e-KYC or the Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC.
What Is Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC?
This tool allows Aadhaar cardholders to establish their identity in a paperless and electronic fashion. This paperless e-KYC system involves the generation of a secure and sharable digitally signed XML that can be easily downloaded on a laptop or mobile device.
The XML includes the name and address of the cardholder along with other details of the holder’s choice (such as photo, date of birth, gender, etc.). Once the data is downloaded from the UIDAI website, it can be shared with the concerned service provider for verification purposes.
This electronic means of identity verification significantly lowers the cost and time, otherwise consumed for a paper-based identity authentication process. This Aadhaar authentication system allows the Aadhaar holder to share the information of his/her choice, without the disclosure of the Aadhaar number. Digitally signed by the UIDAI, this system allows detection of any tampering, while the encrypted KYC data allows the Aadhaar holder control of their own data.
Step-By-Step Guide To Generate Aadhaar e-KYC Offline
Mentioned below is a step-by-step guide to generate Aadhaar e-KYC offline:
1. Go to https://resident.uidai.gov.in/offlineaadhaar.
2. Here you will be required to enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or a 16-digit virtual ID along with the captcha code. Click onto ‘Send OTP’. A One Time Password will be sent on your mobile number via SMS. Please note that your mobile number should be present in the Aadhaar database.
3. Once the OTP is entered, you will be redirected to a new page.
4. On this page, your name as on the Aadhaar card, Pin code and a captcha code have to be entered. After clicking on the verify button, you will be again redirected to a new page.
5. A shareable document with your name and address will be generated. Here you will be allowed to choose additional information you wish to download for offline verification purpose. Such information includes mobile number, gender, e-mail address, date of birth and photo.
6. Next, a share code as per the instructions on the website and a security code needs to be entered. Remember that this share code will be required to decode the ZIP file downloaded from the website.
7. Once submitted, the password-protected ZIP file will be downloaded on your device. The file can be extracted using the share code and saved at your desired location.
The Aadhaar offline e-KYC data can be made available in a digital format (XML/PDF) as well as the printed format (QR Code), depending on the resolution of photo required by the service provider.
Here, it is important to note that this system requires reliable internet connectivity and a robust technical infrastructure at the end of the verifying party. With UIDAI maintaining a record of the KYC requests, the reliability and authenticity of this system are further solidified.
