How to rectify provident fund birth record using Aadhaar?

The EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization) issued a circular on the 3rd of April 2020 stating the liberalization of norms regarding changing the individual’s date of birth in their records. The EPFO has decided to accept the Aadhaar as a valid proof of birth to rectify the mistakes in the date of birth mentioned in the individual’s PF account. This decision was announced by the Ministry of Labour on the 5th of April 2020.

  • It will now be easier for individuals to link their UAN (Universal Account Number) with their Aadhaar.
  • All members of the PF account can now rectify errors in their date of birth using their Aadhaar.
  • Aadhaar will now be considered a valid proof of birth by the EPFO.
  • The request for rectification may be submitted online.
  • Once the online request has been submitted by the individual for rectification his/her employer must verify it.
  • Earlier members could correct the date of birth of up to one year.
  • Based on the new norms the members can make a change of up to three years.
  • The difference between the two dates should be less than three years.
  • It could either be minus three years or plus three years.

Aadhaar eKYC Service

The verification of the identity of an Aadhaar holder can be done through an online electronic know your customer (eKYC) service. The identity of an individual can be established through the process of Aadhaar authentication. Any public/private/governmental agency can make use of the Aadhaar eKYC service. The costs are significantly less compared to KYC and paper-based verification.

Linking Aadhaar and UAN

By linking an individual’s UAN to his/her Aadhaar, the EPFO can also easily make use of the e-KYC service to verify the identity of that individual.

  • The EPFO can also validate the date of birth of the PF member online with the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) in an instant.
  • This will significantly reduce the time for processing of each change request.

Notification Issued Earlier

  • A notification was issued earlier by the EPFO.
  • Starting from March 28th 2020 members can withdraw 3 months dearness allowance and basic pay.
  • This advance will be non-refundable.
  • To help the members to make it through the lockdown phase due to COVID-19.
  • Only those members who had completed the KYC compliance could make use of this facility.

Linking UAN to Aadhaar will ensure that their Provident Fund accounts are KYC compliant. Simplifying the linking process of UAN and Aadhaar also has additional benefits. The members of PF account will now have access to online services like applying for an advance from the Employees Provident Fund account or for a nomination.
