How to check Aadhaar linking status in NPCI?

The NPCI or the National Payment Corporation of India is an initiative of the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) and the IBA (Indian Banks Association) operating under the provisions of the PSS Act of 2007 (Payments and Settlement System Act).  The NPCI handles settlement systems and retail transactions and payments in India.

What Is An NPCI Mapper?


The NPCI mapper refers to a repository of Aadhaar numbers maintained by the Aadhaar Payment Bridge System (APB System). Each of these Aadhaar numbers is linked to a particular bank (where the Aadhaar holder has an account). The Aadhaar number of the individual has to be uploaded by the bank in a file format that is specified. This has to be done through the National Automated Clearing House (NACH) portal. The purpose of the NPCI Mapper is to direct all the transactions/payments that are Aadhaar based to the respective bank to which the Aadhaar number has been linked.

Seeding Aadhaar Number In The NPCI Mapper


The customer has to get her/his 12 digit UID number linked to their bank account to seed the Aadhaar number in the NPCI mapper. For this, the customer is required to submit specific documents including with the bank. The identity of the customer can be established through Aadhaar based eKYC. Aadhaar eKYC happens through Aadhaar authentication. Aadhaar authentication is a process where the biometric and demographic details of the individual stored in the database of the UIDAI gets verified and confirmed. The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) is the Aadhaar issuing authority. On successful verification, the Aadhaar gets linked to the bank account.

To seed the number within the NPCI mapper you need to follow the steps given below.

  • Visit the branch where you hold an account.
  • Duly fill the consent form and submit it.
  • Bank verifies consent form, verifies documents, and authenticates the signature of the customer.
  • The bank links the Aadhaar to the account details stored on the CBS (Core Banking System).
  • The UID number gets seeded in the NPCI mapper.
  • Maximum of two working days are required.

Follow the steps given below to check the status of Aadhaar linking in NPCI.

  • Approach your bank and request for Aadhaar seeding screenshot.
  • Check and confirm if the status of Aadhaar is ‘Active’.
  • If the status is ‘Active’- Aadhaar number has been linked to the account of the customer by the bank.
  • If not, one of the following possibilities can be expected.
  1. Bank has failed to link the Aadhaar number to the individual’s account in their CBS.
  2. Aadhaar number has not been seeded with the NPCI mapper.
  • Get in touch with the bank to resolve the issue.
  • You could also get in touch with a customer service cell.
  • The branch has the responsibility to get it solved with the help of their internal team.
  • On receiving the Aadhaar number from the customer the bank has to seed the same into the account details of the customer stored on the CBS.
  • The Aadhaar number also has to be uploaded in the NPCI mapper.
  • For escalations, you could approach the Nodal officers of the bank.

Aadhaar seeding is essential to receive DBT (Direct Benefit Transfers) from various schemes of the government. You may link only a single bank account to your Aadhaar. In case you've linked more than one account to your Aadhaar, the benefits will be credited to the bank that was seeded last.
