DigiLocker is one of the online services by the Digital India campaign operated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under the Government of India. This facility allows Indian citizens to store their important documents in electronic format. DigiLocker is a cloud-based storage system for documents.

Every Aadhaar holder in the country can maintain an account under this facility to store their governmental documents in a digital format. The Aadhaar contains the personal details of the individual along with a unique 12 digit number for identification. Besides, it also stores biometric details and demographic information. 

Issued by the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) the Aadhaar is one of the most important of all documents to prove the identity of an Indian citizen/resident. Aadhaar based eKYC is done to prove the identity of the individual. 

Aadhaar online KYC is done through Aadhaar authentication where the personal and biometric details of the individual get submitted to the UIDAI. The UIDAI compares this data with the information on their Aadhaar database and responds with a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.

To maintain an account on DigiLocker you must have an Aadhaar card. Some of the documents that can be stored using this facility include the following.

  • Academic certificates and mark sheets

  • Election ID Card

  • Driver’s License

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate

  • PAN Card

  • Insurance Policies

  • Property Registration Documents

  • Aadhaar Card

The digital format of these documents is obtained from the original issuers of the same. The governmental verification authorities as well as the users can access these documents (just like physical documents) whenever there is a requirement.

  1. Download the DigiLocker mobile app on your smartphone

  2. Log in to the official website of DigiLocker

How Can You Store Governmental Documents In The Electronic Format Using A Digilocker?

Since the DigiLocker is a cloud-based storage system accessing these digital documents is quite easy. The users and the verification authority can do so whenever required.  Given below are all the important details regarding the DigiLocker facility.

Prerequisites For This Facility

The first step is to get you registered on DigiLocker with your mobile phone number that is authenticated. You can also provide your Aadhaar number for registration. However, Aadhaar should be linked to your mobile number. 

Process of Registration on DigiLocker

You can access this facility by downloading the app or by logging on to the official website for DigiLocker.

  • Enter your  registered mobile number or

  • Enter your Aadhaar number

  • Submit all the required details

  • OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number

  • Type in the OTP and wait for authentication

  • Now you can create a user name and password

  • This is to log in to your account on DigiLocker

To link your Aadhaar to your DigiLocker account your mobile number must be linked to your Aadhaar.

How To Fetch e-Documents From Digilocker?

You can get the e-documents like your PAN card or driver's license by entering your PAN card number or driver's license details respectively.  

How To Upload Documents?

To upload your governmental documents on DigiLocker follow the steps given below.

  • Select the ‘Upload Documents’ option

  • Click on ‘Select document type’ to assign the type of document to be uploaded

  • From the drop-down button choose the particular type of document and save it

DigiLocker is also used by the Government to issue certificates. You can store up to one GB of governmental documents using this facility.
