NRIs can now apply for Aadhaar on arrival without the 182-day wait.

Aadhaar Card For NRIs: 182 Days Waiting Period No Longer Necessary.
All residents in India are considered eligible to apply for an Aadhaar card. This is stated in the Aadhaar Act of 2016. To be considered a resident the individual must have lived in India for 182 days in the year preceding the date of applying for an Aadhaar card. This means NRIs who have lived in India for at least 182 days during the previous year can apply for an Aadhaar e-KYC.  According to a new notification issued by the Indian government, the NRIs can apply for an Aadhaar card on arrival. The 182 days waiting period is no longer mandatory.

Aadhaar Card And Its Importance

Issued to the citizens of India, an Aadhaar card contains a unique identification number. This 12 digit identification number is centralized and universal. This e-KYC is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India or the UIDAI. The Aadhaar contains an individual’s personal information like name and date of birth along with their demographic details and biometric information.

Today, the Aadhaar card is considered to be the most important of all documents used to prove the identity of an individual. The identity of a person can be confirmed through the process of Aadhaar authentication. The Aadhaar card stores all the personal and biometric information of an individual in a database of the Indian government. Today all citizens of India require an Aadhaar card to avail of the subsidies given by the government and the services for public welfare.

Some of the important uses for an Aadhaar card are the following;
  • As proof of identity.
  • To apply for a passport.
  • To avail subsidies from the government.
  • To open a new bank account.
  • Quick disbursal of provident fund.
  • To get LPG at a subsidized rate.
